His Excellency Fra Nicholson Esqr Capt Genl Sr Tho Lawrence Bart Secry the honble Colonel Henry Iowles Chancellor Thomas Tench Esqr
Henry Philips Servt to Mr Philip Clarke Attorney at Law being Sent for as also Mr William Bladen Clerk of the house of Delegates who Came accordingly & by order produced to the Board the Iournal of the Committee of Laws & the Committee of Agreviances this last Sessions of Assembly kept by the said Philips who was Sworn to make true Answer to what Questions should be Asked him in that Behalf The said Pnilips to Oath taken is demanded to give Ac count whether those two Iournals were his hand Writing & whether he was Clerk all the while to those two Committees who says they are both his hand writing and that Iournal of the Committee of Laws he kept himself but as to the other he was there but two days & writ only what Mr Harris the Chairman of that Committee dictated & read to him he is asked if the Iournal of the Committee of Aggreivances was read to that Committee after he had writ out the same & says it was not he is asked if they gave him any other Papers & says they did not he is demanded to make answer as he is upon oath whether that Iournal be all that was Ordered to be writ. p. 27 And says that it was but that he made another Copy thereof by Mr Harriss Order which he gave to him & being asked who took care of all the Loose Papers that lay before that Com mittee & does Say Mr Harris and that no Person else took them into his Possession he is asked who dictated to him in keeping the Iournal of the Committee of Laws & does say sometimes one & sometimes another of the said Committee & that the whole Journal was read to them afterwards he is asked what became of the rough Draughts & Minuits of that Iournal & makes answer that he kept Rough Minuits of that Com mittee only for the first week and that his Master Philip Clark had them as he Believes being left in his said Masters Cham ber at Mr Blackwell where the said Committee sate he is asked who Ordered him to Stile the house of Delegates the honble house of Assembly & does say the Committee did he is asked if his Master Mr Clark ever told him that should leave the Tobacco that was allowed him for being Clerk to those Com mittees & makes Answer that his Masr never did
