Also, the following: STATE of MARYLAND, 1 Executive Department, > Annapolis, January 9th, 1872. ) Gentlemen of the General Assembly of Maryland: I herewith transmit to you, communications received in the Executive Department during the recess of the Legisla- ture, in reference to the purchase of land in the State of Maryland by the United States, lor the purpose of dedicating it as a Cemetery of Soldiers of the United States. Mr. Cooper submitted the following message: BY THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES, January 9, 1872. Gentlemen of the Senate : We respectfully propose, with the concurrence of your Honorable Body, the appointment of a Joint Committee, consisting of three members of the Senate and four members of the Mouse of Delegates, to visit and examine into the condition of the Maryland Penitentiary. We have appointed on the part of the House, Messrs. Cooper, Banks, Sparrow, and Riley. By order, MILTON Y. KIDD, Chief Clerk. Which was read, absented to, and sent to the Senate. The Speaker announced the following Standing Committees of the House : Committee on Elections.—Messrs. Spencer, Stone, Hardcas-tle, Bond, Young, of Washington, Hamilton, C. R., New- comer.
