annum. The City Solicitor shall be the legal adviser of the Mayor and
Council of Salisbury, and shall have general supervision and direction of
all legal business of the City.

He shall have charge of the preparation and trial of all suits, actions
and proceedings of every kind to which the City shall be a party in any
Court, State or Federal, or before any Justice of the Peace and of all
actions brought to enforce the ordinances of the Mayor and Coutcil of
Salisbury or to punish violations thereof. And he shall personally par-
ticipate in the trial of all such suits, actions and proceedings in any Court
or before any Justice of the Peace of this State or in any Federal Court.
And he shall personally participate in all such suits, actions and proceed-
ings in all other Courts when he is instructed in writing by the Mayor so
to do. And he shall discharge such other duties as may from time to time
be prescribed by ordinances not inconsistent with this Act. And he shall
receive extra compensation for any extra and special services and for
suits in this State or Federal Courts.

276. The Policemen before entering upon the duties of their office,
shall each take and subscribe before a Justice of the Peace of Wicomico
County, residing in said City, an oath to well and faithfully, without
partiality or prejudice, perform the duties of his office in all things
according to the laws of the State and the ordinances of said City and
to enforce said laws and said ordinances to the best of his ability, which
oath shall be certified to by the Justice of the Peace before whom it is
taken and filed with the Clerk of the Council, and be recorded in the
minutes of said Council, and the original certificate safely kept. The
original certificate, the record thereof or a certified copy of the same under
the hand of said Clerk and the seal of the Mayor and Council to be
evidence in any Court in the State.

277. The said policemen so appointed shall have all the police powers
of constables in this State, and it shall be their duty to enforce the by-
laws, resolutions and ordinances of said City and the laws of the State
of Maryland relating to crimes and misdemeanors committed in said City.
The Mayor, or in his absence or disability, the President of the Council,
may appoint special policemen, with all the powers of the regular police-
men, for a term of not exceeding thirty days when deemed necessary so to
do, the one appointing to fix the compensation of said special policemen;
their duties and powers shall be the same as those of the regular policemen.
Policemen shall have the same fees for making arrests for infractions of
the laws of the State and the ordinances of the City as are now or may
hereafter be allowed constables in criminal cases. All fines for violation
of the provisions of the Charter or ordinances of the City shall, when
collected, be immediately paid over to the Clerk of the Council, with the
names of persons from whom collected, and deposited by him to the
credit of said City.
