as may from time to time be applied for by said Maryland Canal
Company, which said convicts, whilst so hired out to said canal
company, it shall be the duty of the said managers of the House of
Correction to clothe, feed, and guard in all respects, so far as practi-
cable, as if they were engaged at work within said House of Correc-

tion; and in payment of the compensation which may be agreed on
by and between said Maryland Canal Company and the said man-
agers of the House of Correction, for the hire of such convicts, the
said canal company shall issue to the said managers of the House of
Correction and the said managers shall accept the stock of said
Maryland Canal Company at such rates as may be mutually
agreed on.

113. In order to enable the said managers of the House of Cor-
rection to discharge the duties imposed upon them by this act, they
are hereby vested with all powers necessary and proper, in their
discretion, to provide transportation for said convicts to and from
the place or places where they may be engaged at work, and whilst
at work to furnish them at all times with sufficient and proper
food and clothing.

114. The Maryland Canal Company are hereby authorized to
enter into a contract with the board of managers of the Maryland
House of Correction for the hire of convicts in such number and for
such time as they may deem necessary for the purposes of this act,
and they are authorized to work such convicts upon the construc-
tion of a canal from some point on the eastern bank of the Potomac
river, near Bladensburg, in Prince George's county, to a point on
the Patapsco river, near Elkridge landing, in Howard county, or
at any other point or points, or line of said canal.

115. The subscribers to the House of Refuge are a body politic
and corporate, by the name and style of The House of Refuge,
and by that name and style shall have perpetual succession, with
the power to have a common seal and to change the same at pleas-
ure; to make contracts relative to said institution, to sue and be
sued, and by that name and style shall be capable of purchasing,
taking, holding, and conveying any estate, real or personal, for the
use of said corporation, and to establish by-laws and orders for the
regulation of said institution, and the preservation and application
of the funds thereof.

116. Every person who hath subscribed the articles of said asso-
ciation, or who shall hereafter subscribe the same, and pay to the
funds of said institution the sum of fifty dollars, or ten dollars an-
nually for the term of six years, shall be a member for life, and
every person paying the sum of two dollars annually, shall be a
member while he continues to coutiibute the said sum, such pay-
