Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Alsy (now calling herself Alice Jones) having made application to me for a certificate
of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly in such case made and provided
And whereas also upon the oath of John Bradley of Caroline County that the
said negro woman named Alsy (now calling herself Alice Jones) ^for whom this certificate is made^ is the same
person mentioned in the said manumission.  I do therefore grant her said
application and hereby certify that from her own account she was twenty eight
years of age last Christmass or thereabouts four feet ten and a quarter inches
high or thereabouts of a dark mulatto or brown complexion was born in
Queen Anns and raised in Caroline County and has several scars of a burn
on her right arm above and below the elbow and no other notable marks or scars
that I have observed
[seal]   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
           seal of my office this 22d day of May Anno Domini 1832

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas application hath been made to me by a
negro woman named Henny Tilghman for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act of assembly
in such cases made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes are permitted
to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born:  and whereas
also upon the oath of Andrew Mason of Caroline County that the said negro woman named
Henny Tilghman for whom this certificate is made was free born:  I do therefore grant her said
application and hereby certify that from her own account she is about twenty one years of age
five feet four inches high or thereabouts of a black complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has a large scar of a burn on her left wrist and hand and a scar of a cut on
the under part of her left arm and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
[seal]   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
            seal of my office this 22d day of May Anno Domini 1832
