Biography:

Maria Spencer was born a slave in Annapolis, MD circa 1818 to Phoebe Spencer. Maria Spencer and her mother Phoebe were manumitted by her husband John Maynard. The Maynard family resided at 163 Duke of Gloucester Street with their children and other boarders. Maria's mother Phoebe and her brother Fielder lived with the family. Maria and John were the parents of two boys, John Henry and Lewis. After the death of her husband John, Maria became the head of household at their residence on Duke of Gloucester Street. Maria died in Annapolis between 1880-1900.
