A dragon boat can be 48 feet long and about 4 feet wide at its girth, gradually narrowing towards its bow and stern. A dragon boat team consists of twenty-two members, of whom twenty are paddlers, sitting in ten rows of two each. In the back is the steersperson, and a drummer sits in the front.

In Maryland, dragon boat races are held across the state, from Western Maryland to the Eastern Shore. Teams from the Mid-Atlantic to the Mid-West compete to win on behalf of their racing clubs or to benefit charities.

In Calvert County, the Annual Dragon Boat Festival at North Beach will be held on Saturday, June 13, 2026, while the Solomons Dragon Boat Festival will be held on August 22, 2026.
Baltimore hosts several dragon races throughout the year. The next annual Baltimore Dragon Boat Challenge will be held on July 25, 2026, at the Middle Branch Park on the Patapsco River. The annual Catholic Charities Dragon Boat Races will take place in September 2026 at Baltimore's Inner Harbor.
