Maryland runners have excelled at both national and international events. Quincy Wilson of Gaithersburg set the American and world records for the under-18 indoor and outdoor 400-meter dash in 2024. In the same year, at age 16, Wilson became the youngest American male track and field athlete to compete at the Olympics and was part of the U. S. team that won gold in the 4x400-meter relay in Paris, France.

Throughout the year, running events take place at various locales throughout Maryland.

In Anne Arundel County, the Annapolis Striders sponsor marathons and other events, including the annual Annapolis 10-Mile Run, which is next scheduled for August 30, 2026.
The Annual Governor's Bay Bridge Run (10K) crossed the Chesapeake Bay Bridge from the Eastern Shore to Sandy Point State Park in May from 1985 to 2006. Its successor, the annual Chesapeake Bay Bridge Run/Walk, started in November 2014. The sixth largest 10K in the United States, it next will be run on November 8, 2026.

Baltimore City has many running events. Moreover, the Baltimore Road Runners Club sponsors running and walking events year round. Also in "Charm City," the Baltimore 10 Miler will be held on June 6, 2026 in Druid Hill Park, while the Baltimore Women's Classic 5K will be held on June 28, 2026, at Power Plant Live. The Baltimore Marathon, also known as the Baltimore Running Festival, will be held on October 17, 2026. The 26.2-mile race features some $100,000 in prizes.
In Baltimore County, the Baltimore Triathlon will next take place at the Hammerman Area of Gunpowder Falls State Park on October 3-4, 2026, while the Angel Park 5K & 1-Mile Family Fun Run will be held at Perry Hall in December 2026.
The Frederick Running Festival will next be held in May 2027.
The Maryland Half-Marathon & 5K, a charity run benefiting the University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, now held in Maple Lawn in Howard County, will next be held on June 6, 2026. Previously, it had been held in Timonium, Baltimore County.
In Montgomery County, the Froggy Hollow 5 & 9 will be held in Clarksburg in March 2027.
Also in Montgomery County, the Nanty Narking Nearly 9K & 2 Mile Fun Stroll was held in Sandy Spring in May 2016 and 2017. It followed a path by local historic sites, and offered Civil War era music as well.
The St. Michaels Running Festival in Talbot County last took place in May 2025 and will not be held in 2026.
In Wicomico County, the annual Storm Warriors 5K Run/Walk next will be held in November 2026 in Ocean City.
