MARYLAND AT A GLANCE

SPORTS

SKIING

Downhill skiing is a popular sport in the Appalachian Mountains of Garrett County in Western Maryland.

Two Maryland state parks, New Germany State Park in Grantsville and Herrington Manor State Park near Oakland, offer visitors 20 miles of cross-country ski trails. Savage River State Forest near Grantsville contains some 9 miles of cross-country ski trails within its borders.

Snowmobiling is available throughout the winter at several of Maryland's state forests and parks, including Potomac-Garrett State Forest, Savage River State Forest, Deep Creek Lake State Park and Natural Resource Management Area, and Wolf Den Run State Park. Snowmobilers can use designated trails when there is six inches or more of snow present. All snowmobiles, or off-road vehicles (ORV), must be registered annually with the Department of Natural Resources and the registration sticker must be displayed.
