Under the Department are the Enterprise Zone Advisory Committee, the Western Maryland Consortium, and the Western Maryland Foreclosure Partnership Advisory Board. The Department also oversees the Tourism Office.

The Department coordinates the development, adoption, and implementation of County land use plans and policies. Both short- and long-range planning services are provided by the Department to various County boards, including the Planning and Zoning Commission, and the Board of County Commissioners, as well as to the general public. The Department also provides assistance to outside agencies focusing on development opportunities in the County.
Under the Department are six offices: Building Safety, Code Enforcement, Geographic Systems and Data Management, Permits and Licensing, Planning, and Zoning Administration and Land Use.
PLANNING & ZONING COMMISSION
The Planning and Zoning Commission in Allegany County consists of seven members appointed to five-year terms by the Board of County Commissioners (Code Land Use Article, secs. 2-101 through 3-304).
