DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS

[photo, Anne Arundel County Department of Public Works, Heritage Office Complex, 2662 Riva Road, Annapolis, Maryland] In Anne Arundel County, the Department of Public Works was established in 1947, although its functions had been under the purview of other agencies before.

The Department is responsible for the construction and maintenance of public buildings and facilities, including roads, and water and sewer systems, solid waste systems, and recycling.

The Department manages and implements building projects included in the County's annual capital budget (except for those under the Board of Education or Community College); prepares design standards, specifications, and details for the County; and reviews major water and sewer infrastructures, transmission mains, pumping stations, and capital projects. The Department is responsible for the engineering, design, construction, maintenance, and repair of County roads and the issuance of right-of-way permits; and the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signals, traffic signs, pavement markings, and street lighting.

[photo, Utility Operations Complex, Dept. of Public Works, 445 Maxwell Frye Road, Millersville, Maryland] With respect to water and wastewater systems, the Department manages the County watershed and stormwater system, including the design and construction of watershed improvement structures and facilities for improved water quality management. It constructs, operates, maintains, inspects, and repairs water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, water pumping stations, wastewater pumping stations, water storage facilities, water meters, water and wastewater mains and conduits, and fire hydrants, and tests and analyzes water and wastewater.

[photo, Utility Operations Complex, Department of Public Works, 445 Maxwell Frye Road, Millersville, Maryland] In addition, the Department collects, disposes of, and recycles residential solid waste; operates facilities for handling solid waste; and operates and maintains public water and wastewater utility systems (County Code, secs. 13-1-101 through 13-6-105).

Under the Department are four bureaus: Engineering, Highways, Utility Operations, and Waste Management Services.
