of the Council of Maryland, 1778-1779. 35

[Council to P. S. Smith.]

In Council 14th April 1778.
Sir.
We have sent you, by Martin Norris, 1500 Dollars, towards
the Purchase of Provisions. We shall be glad to receive Infor-
mation from you that more is wanted: this, we expect, may
last you some Time. It will not do, by any Means, to barrel

C. C.

Beef at this Time of the year. If Gentlemen who have Cattle
fit for Slaughter will not part from them when the Army so
much needs them, we request you'll make Use of the Power
given you by the Law, and get the Cattle, at all Events. If
you receive Money for the Congress, and should have Occa-
sion to expend it in the Purchase of Provisions, do so, but we
would not have you keep it in Hand in Expectation of its
being wanted for that Purpose because we hope to have Money
in Hand to supply you and we know it is desirable to draw
what we can into the Continental Treasury.
We are &ca
