An Act for the Assessment and Payment of the Public Charge of
this Province.
Whereas there are the Sums of Twelve Hundred and Thirty-
three Pounds One Shilling and Six-pence, Current Money, and Two
Millions Six Hundred Seventy-four Thousand Four Hundred and
Fourteen Pounds of Tobacco, due from the Public of this Province
to the several Creditors thereof, as appears by the Journals of Ac-
counts assented to by both Houses of this present Session of Assem-
bly: For the Discharge and Payment whereof,

Preamble

Be it Enacted by the Right Honourable the Lord Proprietary, by
and with the Advice and Consent of his Lordship's Governor, and
the Upper and Lower Houses of Assembly, and the Authority of
the same, That the Sum of Twelve Hundred Thirty-three Pounds
One Shilling and Six-pence Current Money aforesaid, be paid by
the Treasurers of this Province out of the public Money in their
Hands, to the several and respective Creditors mentioned in the
said Journals of Accounts, and who have Credits given them in said
Journals, in Money; and that the Clerk of the Lower House of As-
sembly give Certificates to the several and respective Money-Creditors
on said Journals; and on producing such Certificate or Certificates
to the said Treasurers, or either of them, they shall pay the several
Sums to be mentioned in said Certificate or Certificates, to the Par-
ties entitled thereto; and that the Quantity of Two Millions Six
Hundred Seventy-four Thousand Four Hundred and Fourteen
Pounds of Tobacco, together with a Salary of Ten Pounds per
Centum thereon for Collection, to the several Sheriffs who shall
collect and pay the same, shall be assessed and levied from the several
taxable Inhabitants of this Province, by an equal Levy or Assessment
this Year.

And be it further Enacted by the Authority aforesaid, That the
Honourable Benjamin Tasker, Esq; Edmund Jenings, Esq; Col.
Charles Hammond, Philip Thomas, Esq; Daniel Dulany, Esq; and
Col. Benjamin Tasker, of the Upper House, and that the Honour-
able Col. Edward Sprigg, Dr. Charles Carroll, Major Thomas Shere-
dine, Mr. Thomas Worthington, Mr. Turner Wootton, and Major
Henry Hall, of the Lower House of Assembly, or the major Part of
them, be, and are hereby appointed a Committee, to meet together
at the City of Annapolis, on the first Tuesday of October next, then
and there to assess and apportion the aforesaid Quantity of Tobacco,
with the Salary aforesaid thereon, by even and equal Portions, on
the taxable Inhabitants aforesaid, and particularly to order and
direct how much thereof shall be levied and collected by the Sheriff
of each respective County, and to what Persons, being public Credi-
tors, the respective Sheriffs shall pay the same; and a fair Journal
of all and singular their Proceedings in the Premises, to make and
deliver to the Clerk of the Lower House of Assembly, to be laid
