subject to taxation, from the operation of the laws of this
State, imposing taxes for the payment of the debts of the
State, and for county purposes.

chap. 253.

Sec. 6. And be it enacted. That this act shall be taken
and considered as a part of the said act of eighteen hun
dred and thirty-one, chaper one hundred and thirty-three,
and its supplements, which are by this act proposed to be ex-
tended, whenever tbe same shall be accepted by the stock-
holdors of said bank, in general meeting assembled, and
notice thereof given to the Treasurer of the Western

Sec. 7. And be it enacted, That all such parts of the said
act of eighteen hundred and thirty-one, chapter one hun-
dred and thirty-three, and its supplements, as are inconsis-
tent with the provisions of this act, be and the same shall
be repealed, upon the acceptance of this act and notice
thereof as aforesaid.

Sec 8. And be it enacted, That the said bank shall be
subject to all the restrictions, liabilities and duties imposed
by the act entitled, an act to extend the charters of the sev-
eral banks therein mentioned, passed ninth March, eighteen
kundred and forty-three, chapter two hundred and fifty-one.

CHAPTER 253.

 

An act to incorporate a literary institution in Washington
County, under the name of the College of St. James.

Passed March
4, 1844.

SECTION 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of
Maryland, That Frederick Dorsey, Thomas Buckanan,
John R. Dall, William Rollinson Whittingham, Theodore
B. Lyman, John B. Kerfoot, Reuben Riley, Russel Trever,
Dwight E. Lyman and their successors, being members and
attached to the Protestant Episcopal Church in Maryland,
shall be and they are hereby constituted a corporation or
body politic-, by the name of the trustees of the College of
St. James, and by that name shall have perpetual succession
and may sue and be sued, implead and be impleaded, and
may purchase and hold property, whether acquired by pur-
chase, gift or devise, and whether real or personal or mixed,
and may make and have a corporate seal, and the same break
and alter at their pleasure, and shall have all other rights
belonging to similar corporations by the laws of this State.

Incorporated.

Sec. 2. And be it enacted, That the object of said
association is hereby declared to be the promotion of Chris-
tian and liberal education.
