(1)          (1)         In Charles County, the State's

Attorney's salary is $20,000 a year; and he shall serve
full time. He shall appoint a deputy State's attorney
who shall serve full time and whose salary shall be at
such compensation, not exceeding $17,000 a year, as the
State's Attorney may deem proper, to be paid by the
County Commissioners. In addition to the deputy State's
attorney, the State's Attorney may appoint part—time
assistant State's attorneys in the number approved by the
senior resident circuit court judge. The salaries of
these attorneys shall be fixed by the State's Attorney at
a sum not exceeding $12,000 a year, to be paid by the
County Commissioners.

(2)          The deputy State's attorney and the
assistant State's attorneys shall serve at the pleasure
of the State's Attorney and shall perform such work as
may be directed by the State's Attorney, or as authorized
by law, and may present cases to the grand juries, sign
indictments and criminal informations and perform such
other acts and duties in relation to the grand juries and
in the operation of the office as are necessary and
proper.

(3)          The deputy State's attorney shall devote
full time to the duties of the office and [shall] MAY not
engage in the private practice of law at any time in any
jurisdiction, during the tenure of office.

(4)          The State's Attorney may appoint a
special investigator, who shall be directly under the
supervision of the State's Attorney and shall perform
such work as the State's Attorney may designate from time
to time. The salary of the special investigator, who
shall serve at the State's Attorney's pleasure, shall be
[twelve thousand dollars ($12,000) per year] DETERMINED
BY THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS. The special investigator
shall devote his full time and attention to his duties as
special investigator and [shall] MAY not engage in other
employment during the time he is employed as special
investigator.

(5)          The County Commissioners shall provide
the secretarial help required to handle the business of
the State's Attorney's office.

SECTION 2. AND BE IT FURTHER ENACTED, That this Act
shall take effect July 1, 1976.
