(House Joint Resolution No. 26)
A House Joint Resolution concerning
United States Energy Policy
FOR the purpose of requesting that the Congress of the
United States enact a comprehensive energy policy that
will allow us to become less dependent on foreign oil
reserves by utilizing alternative domestic energy
resources and that will review nuclear mishap safety
procedures.
WHEREAS, The United States depends heavily on foreign
oil reserves for much of its energy needs; and
WHEREAS, The political climate in many of these
countries, particularly that of the Organization of
Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), threatens any
continuous supply of oil; and
WHEREAS, The State of Maryland, as well as other
states, has an abundant supply of coal that can be used to
produce energy to heat buildings and generate electricity;
and
WHEREAS, The possibility of using other energy sources
such as nuclear power and solar energy is becoming more
realistic; and
WHEREAS, These alternatives to foreign oil allow the
United States to avoid energy crises stemming from a sudden
curtailment of energy supplies by foreign countries; and
WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States has done
little to produce an energy policy that would allow the
nation to become less dependent on foreign energy sources;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF MARYLAND, That the
Congress of the United States is requested to enact a
comprehensive energy policy for the United States; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That this energy policy provide for the
development and utilization of the nation's coal reserves,
nuclear energy, solar energy, and other domestic energy
resources that will make the nation less dependent on
foreign oil; and be it further
