Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

Certificate is made was free born I do therefore grant his said application and hereby
certify that from his own account he was thirty four years of age the first day of October
last five feet four and a quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline
County of a dark complexion his left leg withered and has two large scears one on the
left thigh and the other on the left leg just below the knee joint and no other notable
marks or scars that I have observed
           In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of
           my office this 24th day of January Anno Domini 1831

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit; Whereas heretofore to wit on the twenty second
day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty three a certain
Mary Traverse of Caroline County by deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and
recorded among the land records of Caroline County did manumit and set free a certain negro
man named Aaron (otherwise called Aaron Traverse) to be free and at the perfect liberty from
and after the date of the said manumission.  And the said negro man named Aaron
having made application to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably to the act of assembly
in such case made and provided; and whereas also upon the oath of William Whiteley Junr
of Caroline County that the said negro man named Aaron for whom this certificate is
made is the same person mentioned in the said manumission.  I do therefore grant his said
application and hereby certify that from the age as expressed in said manumission the
said negro man Aaron will be thirty years of age the twenty second day of March next
he is about five feet four and three quarter inches high of a dark brown complexion was
born and raised in Caroline County and has a large scar on his right and and no
other mark or scar that I have observed   And I further certify that the said negro man
named Aaron made oath on the Holy Evangels of Almighty God that he had lost the
original passport and not sole or gave it to any other coloured person whatever
(seal) In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
          seal of my office this 20th day of February Anno Domini 1832
