Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

permitted to travel out out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free
born and whereas also upon the oath of James Turner of Caroline County that the said
coloured man named William Webb for whom this certificate is made was free born I
do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify that according to his own
account he was twenty two years of age the fourteenth day of January last five feet
one and three quarter inches high or thereabouts was born and raised in Caroline County
Complexion Black has a small scear nearly over the corner of his right eye and two small
scears on his left cheek and scears of burns on the two middle fingers of his left hand
and no other notable marks or scears that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal of
            my office this 14th day of March Anno Domini 1832

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit  whereas application hath been made
to me by a negro woman named Lucy Webb for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the act
of Assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and mulattoes
are permitted to travel out of this state upon the obtention of a certificate of being free born
and whereas also upon the oath of Nathan Connelly of Caroline County that the said
negro ^woman^ named Lucy Webb for whom this certificate is made was free born.  I do therefore
grant her said application and hereby certify that from her own account she
was twenty four years of age the first day of April Instant five feet high or
thereabouts of a brown complexion was born and raised in Caroline County
and has a large scar of a burn on the left side of her neck just under her jaw
and no other notable marks or scars that I have observes
(seal)               In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix
                      the public seal of my office this 7th day of April Anno Domini 1832
