Caroline County, Certificates of Freedom, 1827-1857

of being free born:  And whereas also upon the oath of Thomas A Edgell of Caroline
County that the said mulatto man named john Webb for whom this certificate is
made was free born.  I do therefore grant his said application and hereby certify
that from his own account he was twenty one years of age the tenth day of December
last five feet five and a quarter inches high or thereabouts of a light mulatto complexion
was born and raised in Caroline County and has a small scar of a scratch
partly across his left cheek and a tolerable large scar of a cut on the top of his
left foot and no other notable marks or scars that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public
           seal of my office this 19th day of April Anno Domini 1832

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit: Whereas application hath been made to me
by a negro woman named Eliza Brown for a certificate of her freedom agreeably to the
act of assembly in such case made and provided by which said act free negroes and
mulattoes are permitted to travel out out of this State upon the obtention of a certificate
of being free born and Whereas also upon the oath of Nancy Vincent of Caroline
County that the said negro woman named Eliza Brown for whom this certificate is
made was born I do therefore grant her said application and hereby certify that
from her own account she is about twenty three years of age four feet eleven and three quarter
inches high or thereabouts of a dark brown complexion was born and raised in Caroline
County and has two small scars over her left eye one nearly perpendicular extending
across the eye brow and the other nearly horizontal above the eye brow and a
scar of a burn in the palm of her right hand and a small mole near the same towards
the joint of the thumb and no other notable marks or scears that I have observed
(seal)   In Testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my name and affix the public seal
           of my office this 19th day of April Anno Domini 1832
