Caroline County to wit;  Be it remembered that on this 14th day
of November eighteen hundred and fourteen I delivered to Hawkens
Ash a certificate a copy of which is as follows

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit
Whereas Hawkens Ash a negro man who alledges himself
to have been free born hath made application to me
for a certificate or pass agreeably to the act of assembly
in such case made and provided and being satisfied
by the evidence of Joshua Driver Esquire that the said
Hawkins Ash to whom this certificate is delivered is free
and that he hath known the said Hawkins Ash for many
years and that he is absolutely to his ^own^ knowledge free and
entitled to a pass  I do therefore grant his application
and hereby certify that before the information of the said
Hawkins Ash that he is forty five years of age the first
day of march next; he is five feet seven inches high
of a black complexion has a scar on the inside
of the calf of the right leg and has an old appearance
of his age but no other notable marks that
I can discover

             In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand
(County)   and affixed the public seal of my office this
(  seal   )   fourteenth day of November in the year of
                out Lord one thousand eight hundred and fourteen

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit
Whereas a certain Black man by the name
of Henry heretofore on the second day of June
in the year of our lord eighteen hundred
and two was manumitted by a certain
Charles Blair to be free on the first day
of January eighteen hundred and fourteen
as by the said manumission reference
being had will appear; And whereas
the said Black man called Henry hath
made application to me for a certificate
of his freedom agreeable to an act of assembly
Upon the Oath of Robert Stevens that
the said Black man called Henry is the
