Caroline County to wit  Be it remembered that on this
12.th day of October Eighteen hundred and fourteen I delivered
to Stephen Stanford a Certificate a copy of which is as follows

          State of Maryland Caroline County to wit
          Whereas Stephen Stanford a negro man who alledges
himself to have been free born hath made application
to me for a Certificate or pass agreeably to the act of
assembly in such case made and provided and
being satisfied by the Oath of Solomon Brown that the
said Stephen Stanford to whom this Certificate is delivered
is free and that he has known the said Stephen Stanford
for many years and that he has always been reputed as
a person free born and that he has always been reputed
as a peacibly honest and inoffensive person.  I do therefore
grant his application and hereby certify that upon
the information of the said Stephen Stanford that he
is thirty three years of age the twenty second day of
August last; he is five feet six Inches high of a
yellow Complexion has a Scar on his right cheek and
another on the left side of the forehead near the hair
and no other notable marks which I can discover
                   In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my
                   hand and affixed the public seal of my
(County)     office this twelfth day of October in the
(   seal  )     year of our Lord One thousand eight
                   hundred and fourteen
