self to receive the Assessment Tax and that you have already

received fully sufficient for this Purpose, if you have not, pray
exert yourself, that the Recruiting Service, which it is the Duty
of every Man to forward, may not suffer for want of Money.
We are &ca
To the Sheriffs of the
several Counties,

[Council to County Lieutenants.]
Circular. In Council Annapolis 12th April 1778.

165

Sir
We inclose you several Copies of the Act to procure Troops
for the American Army, one of which is designed for each of
the Field Officers of your County, which be pleased to dis-
tribute: the others of them for the Magistrates and those who
are more immediately concerned in the Execution of the Law.
We very much wish a proper Spirit may diffuse itself through-
out the State, so that the Number of Recruits we want may
be made up, by voluntary Inlistments and in order that there
may be a Supply of the Bounty Money, the inclosed Letter
to the Sheriff of your County, containing Orders to him to
pay the sixty Dollars Bounty on your Certificate or the Cer-
tificate of a Field Officer, for every Recruit you or he may
pass, agreeable to the Act. All Recruits and Substitutes
within your County, we request may be delivered, as soon as
may be, to any of the Regular Officers of the Maryland Con-
tinental Regiments, to the End they may be sent forward to
the Camp with all Expedition and, if there should be no
Regular Officers in your County to receive them, send them
to the Regular Officer the nearest to you or advise him of
your having such Recruits or Substitutes and request him to
take charge of them. We cannot but repeat our Wish, that
our Quota of Recruits may be raised and, as it will depend
in great Measure, on the Activity of the Recruiting Officers,
be so obliging as to advise us of the Conduct of those appointed
under the late Act, in your County and, if remiss, mention to
us such as you think would be more diligent, in the Place
of those,
We are &ca
To the Lieuts of the
several Counties
