              The Deposition of Leonard Johnson Aged twenty one years or thereabouts who deposeth and Saith that he being comanded

by Martin Trontham Subsheriff of this County to aid and assist him in the takeing of Peter Whaples of Indian River who had

made his escape from him after three writts were by him Served upon him Comeing to the Said Whaples his house y^w Sheriff

went in and asked for Peter Whaples who answered here am I. I am glad of it Said the Sheriff Now I will Secure y^w Secure

me for what Said Whaples. The Said Sheriff then Comanded all about him to Aid and assist him y^e binding of him. Then y^e

Said Peter Started up and Said they should not Saying further that he would dye before he would be bound & Carryed away

like a Dogg. The Sheriff and John: Teague throwing him downe upon y^e bed Charles Tindall went to the Gunn Racks and

took down a Gun Saying wee have gunns as well as you. Upon which this Deponents Brother took hold of his Gunn after

Some busle the Gunn was taken away. And then this Deponent with Some others persuaded Charles Tindall out of doors and

Told him wee Came not to doe any harm, The Said Tindall answered he was willing the said Whaples should goe downe with

him but he should not lye bounden in his own house And that they should not carry him away till the morning. The sd Sheriff

Comanded the sd Tindall to aid and assist him with his prisoner, who replyed what need you take me, here is enough besides

Sometime after that Came John:Barker with four Men to y^e best of his knowledge and likewise Peter Whaples his Son along

with him. Peter Whaples told him he had sent for him, for the Sheriffe was Comd to Carry him away. John:Teague then Said

that they would take the Said Whaples along with them, the sd John:Barker replyed that if he were in Said Whaples his place

he would Say that he would not goe along with him After that the Said Barker told this Deponent & others with him that they

were young Men and did not know what they Came about Saying if y^w should Raise a Mutiny among us & kill one of us you

would be hanged for it And that if they should break a Limb of theirs y^e amends would be in their own hands, for the power

of Maryland would not bear them out in what they did Sometime after which: The Said Barker went away and Said Whaples with

him who bid y^e Sheriff a good night and told he was young: The Sheriff made answer I thought y^w would have gone along with us

he Said no he would goe about his business, the Sheriff then Said, what John: Barker y^w will carry him away no replyed sd Barker

I will not Carry him away but if he will goe along with me I will give him a passage over the Creek, and further this Deponent

Saith that before the Said Barker Came, the Sd Whaples Said he would goe with us in y^e morning and further this Deponent Saith

not to the trueth of all which this Deponent hath hereunto Sett his hand this 24^th: day of Septem^r 1694
