COMMISSIONERS AS OF JUNE 1, 1957, AND RELATING
GENERALLY TO THE POSITION OF SAID CLERK AND TO
THE SALARY AND DUTIES THEREFOR.

Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Sub-section 38 (a) of Article 87 of the Annotated Code of
Maryland (1951 Edition and 1956 Supplement), title "Sheriffs", sub-
title "Compensation and Duties", be and it is hereby repealed and
re-enacted, with amendments; and Section 284 (b) (7) of the Code
of Public Local Laws of Allegany County (1955 Edition, being Article
1 of the Code of Public Local Laws of Maryland), title "Allegany
County", sub-title "Juvenile Court", be and it is hereby repealed and
re-enacted, with amendments; and new Sections 63A to 63-1, inclu-
sive, be and they are hereby added to said Code, to follow imme-
diately after Section 63 thereof and to be under the new sub-title
"Classified Service", and all to read as follows:

38. (a) Allegany County.—The sheriff of Allegany County shall
receive an annual salary of $4,000. $4,800.

The sheriff shall appoint, subject to the provisions of Sections 63A
to 63-I of the Allegany County Code (1955 Edition), sub-title "Classi-
fied Service",
five (5) deputies at an annual salary of not less than
$3,300 each; one of said deputies shall be assigned to the sheriff to
attend the magistrate for juvenile causes to execute his process,
orders and directions, and when not so engaged, to perform such
other duties as the sheriff may requite.

284. (b) (7) Such Magistrate for Juvenile Causes is empow-
ered, subject to the provisions of Sections 63A to 63-1 of the Allegany
County Code (1955 Edition), sub-title "Classified Service",
to appoint
a suitable person to act as his clerk, who may be a woman, and who
shall receive an annual salary of not less than Three Thousand Dollars
($3,000.00), payable monthly, two-thirds by the County Commis-
sioners of Allegany County and one-third by the Mayor and City
Council of Cumberland, Maryland, and such clerk shall attend at
such times and places and perform such duties as may be directed
by said Magistrate, and who shall be removable by said Magistrate
for Juvenile Causes at his discretion. The said clerk shall, prior to
commencing his duties, apply for and secure a corporate bond in the
sum of Five Thousand ($5,000.00) Dollars, the cost of which shall
be borne by the county. In assessing the costs in such cases as may
come before him, said Magistrate shall allow the same ratio per diem
for attendance of witnesses and mileage outside the City of Cumber-
land as is allowed in the Circuit Court for Allegany County, which
shall be paid by the Board of County Commissioners for Allegany
County in the same manner as is paid to witnesses before the Circuit
Court; provided, however, that no witnesses shall be paid either per
diem or mileage who shall not have been regularly summoned by
said Magistrate.

Classified Service

63A. (a) There is hereby created a classified service in Allegany
County. All persons appointed, by the County Commissioners of Alle-
gany County or by the executive head of any department, institution,
office or agency of said County on June 1,
15, 1957, shall belong to the
Classified Service, except those expressly exempted herein.
