RESOLUTION 11-72 AMENDING
TOWN CHARTER OF
NORTH BEACH, MARYLAND
IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED By the Town Council of North Beach, Maryland,
that the ward system used for election purposes not be used after the 1972 election,
and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that all references to this election system be
deleted from the Charter, and
BE IT SPECIFICALLY RESOLVED, that Section 214 A (29A) be repealed in its
entirety and
BE IT SPECIFICALLY RESOLVED that Sections 27, 30, 31 and 33 shall be
repealed and re-enacted as follows:
214.(27) (Registration): There shall be a registration on the first Saturday in
August and October in every even numbered year thereafter, of qualified
persons not registered to vote. If necessary for the performance of
registration or the convenience of the citizens of the Town, the Mayor may
designate additional days as registration days. The Council is hereby
authorized by ordinance, to adopt and enforce any provisions necessary to
establish and maintain a system of permanent registration, and to provide for
a re-registration every election year if desired. Registration will be held every
election year.
214.(30) (Election of the Mayor, Treasurer and Councilmen): On the Tuesday after
the first Monday in November 1974 and every two years thereafter, the
qualified voters shall elect a Mayor, a Treasurer and six Councilmen for
terms of two years.
214.(31) (Conduct of Elections): It shall be the duty of the Board of Supervisors of
Elections to provide for each special and general election a suitable place or
places for voting and suitable ballot boxes and ballots and/or voting
machines. The ballots and/or voting machines shall show the names of each
candidate nominated for elective office in accordance with the provisions of
this Charter, arranged in alphabetical order with no party designation of any
kind. The Board of Supervisors of Elections shall keep the polls open from
7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on election days or for longer hours if the Council
requires it.
214.(33) (Vote Count): Within forty-eight hours after the closing of the polls, the
Board of Supervisors of Elections shall determine the vote cast for each
candidate or question and shall certify the results of the election to the Clerk
of the Town who shall record the result in the minutes of the Council. The
candidate for Mayor with the highest number of votes in the general election
shall be declared elected as Mayor. The candidate for treasurer with the
highest number of votes in the general election shall be declared elected as
Treasurer. The six candidates for Councilmen with the highest number of
votes in the said election shall be declared elected as Councilmen.
