83 To all whom it may concern Be it Known that I John Smith free negro of Anne Arundel County in the State of Maryland for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto moving and especially in consideration that she is my wife have released from slavery liberated manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release from slavery liberate manumit and set free my negro woman named Amy my wife as aforesaid (whom I purchased in eighteen hundred and thirty six on the twenty second day of February from David Lairbank of Talbot County in the state aforesaid and who has been in my possession since the eleventh day of January eighteen hundred and thirty eight on which last said day I made to her said former master the final payment on the contract of purchase and who is now in my possession she being of the age of forty four years able to work and gain a sufficient livelihood and maintenance and her the said negro woman named Amy my wife as aforesaid I do declare to be henceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner of servitude or service me my executors or administrators forever In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal the seventeenth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and fifty three Signed Sealed and delivered in presence of his James Revell Jno G. Taylor John X Smith (seal) mark Anne Arundel County Sct Be it remembered that on this seventeenth day of December 1853 personally appears John Smith free negro party to the within instrument of writing before me the subscriber a justice of the peace of the state of Maryland for the said County and acknowledged the same to be his act and deed for the purposes within mentioned Acknowledged before paid Recorded 6 Jany 1854 Jno G.
