Whereas many years since I purchased from a certain Brice
J. Worthington Esquire my wife a coloured woman by the name
of Anne and daughter Ellen being at the time slaves for
life the object and intention of the purchase at the time was
that the said woman Anne and her daughter Ellen should
be liberated manumitted and discharged and forever set free
from slavery together with their posterity to wit Ellen Burley
(now Smith) daughter of the said Anne and her children
And whereas it may be necessary and for greater caution that I
should execute and place upon record a deed of Manumission
for the benefit of my said wife Anne Burley and her daughter
Ellen Smith as aforesaid and her children
Now to all whom it may concern  Be it
Known that I Thomas Burley of Anne Arundel County and
state of Maryland for divers good causes and considerations me
thereunto moving have released from slavery liberated
manumitted and set free and by these presents do hereby release
from slavery liberate manumit and set free my wife Anne
Burley and her daughter now Ellen Smith she being about thirty
five years of age  And the children of Ellen to wit  Thomas Smith
aged about eighteen years Eliza Smith aged about seventeen
years Emily Smith aged about thirteen years John Smith aged
about eight years Caroline Smith aged about six years James
Smith aged about three years and an infant child  The
foregoing persons are all well provided for and capable in every way
to support and sustain themselves and to gain a sufficient
livelyhood and maintenance.  I therefore do hereby declare the
whole and several persons as set forth in this deed to be
henceforth free manumitted and discharged from all manner
of service or servitude to me my executors or Administrators forever
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my
seal this third day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand
eight hundred and fifty four
