it Known to me of my own Knowledge to be the person named
and described as and professing to be the party grantor or
manumittor in the foregoing Instrument of writing and
acknowledged the same to be her act and deed for the purposes
therein mentioned  In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my
hand on the day and year herein above mentioned

Whereas by a deed of Manumission bearing date on the eleventh
day of December eighteen hundred and thirty eight duly executed
and recorded in the office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court for
the County of Washington in the District of Columbia I Daniel
Ross did manumit and set free certain negro slaves there possessed
by me and hereinafter mentioned I being at that time and ever
since my intention that each and every of said negroes should
immediately from and after the execution of said Deed have and
enjoy full liberty and perfect freedom as if originally born free
And whereas doubts have been expressed whether said negroes or some
of them can have and enjoy such liberty and freedom under said
deed.  Now Know all men by these presents executed for
confirmation of said deed and for the purpose of effectuating the
intention hereinbefore declared in respect to it and in reference to
said negroes all of whom have since the date aforesaid been living
as free entirely unmolested by any claim whatever on my part
that I Daniel Ross of the County of Washington in the District
of Columbia for divers good causes and considerations me thereunto
moving do hereby give and grant to my negro woman Elsey and
to her children viz.   Hessey Clarke Mary Clarke now Mary
Thompson Patience Clarke Daniel Clarke and Marean Clarke
full liberty and perfect freedom.  To Have and enjoy the same
immediately from and after the execution of these presents to all
intents and purposes as they have heretofore done and in like
manner and to the like effect as if they and each of them had
