is five feet eight inches high proportionally made
and looks well for his age  was raised in Caroline
County and is of a tolerable black complexion has a
very small scar on the left side of his jaw and no other
marks of any note that I can discover
    In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand
and affixed the public seal of my office this seventeenth
day of August in the year of our Lord one thousand eight
hundred and twelve

Caroline County to wit  Be it remembered that on this 24 day
of August 1812 I delivered to negro Lydia a Certificate as follows
Maryland sc.  Caroline County to wit  Whereas heretofore to wit
on the twenty sixth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand
eight hundred and three Henry Downes Esq of Caroline County
by Deed of manumission duly executed acknowledged and
recorded amongst the Records of Caroline County manumitted
and set free a certain negro woman named Lydia to free and
at liberty from and after the date of the said manumission
          And whereas the said negro woman called Lydia hath
made application to me for a certificate of her freedom agreeably
to the act of assembly in such case made and provided and being
satisfied by the information of Mr Downes (who freed the
woman) that the said Lydia is the identical person manumitted
by that name as afd I do therefore grant her
said application and hereby Certify that agreeably to the
age expressed in the manumission afd the said negro
Lydia is about thirty six years of age  she is five feet
three inches and one fourth of an inch high  proportionably
made and has the appearance of a sober steady
woman; was raised in Caroline County   is of a tolerable
dark complexion   has a small scar on the inside
of her right arm about the elbow Joint and no other
notable marks that I can discover
                In Testimony whereof I have hereto set my
    (seal)    hand and affixed the public seal of my office
                this twenty fourth day of August in the year
of our Lord eighteen hundred and twelve  Tho Richardson Clerk
