Digitization Capabilities & Services

The Maryland State Archives offers digitization services that comply with archival standards. Please contact Kathryn Baringer at Kathryn.Baringer@maryland.gov for assistance.

These digitization services are available for a wide range of record types including, but not limited to:

Paper Scanning

  • Office documents
  • Letter, legal, and large format maps and drawings
  • Archival manuscripts

Bound Book Scanning

  • Bound and loose newspapers
  • Experience with all size books and bindings

Archival Preservation Scanning

  • Fragile, rare, and/or loose documents
  • Experience digitizing fragile, rare, and one-of-a-kind materials including:
    • Loose papers, bound books, records, and newspapers
    • Oversized maps, drawings, and large-format materials
    • Speciality film formats such as glass-plate negatives and sheet negatives

Microfilm Scanning

  • 16mm and 35mm (REELS)
  • Positive or negative
  • Bi-tonal output to: TIFF (G4), PDF (all single/multi), and PDF/A
  • Grayscale output to: uncompressed TIFF/JPEG (true 256 shades of gray), JPEG 2000, PDF (single/multi-page), and PDF/A

Output/Additional Services

  • Output Services
    • Delivery via FTP or external drives for customer post-processing
    • Optical Character Recognition (OCR) for full-text searches
    • Embedded metadata
    • Variety of export file options based on customer needs
